12 Turf Rules Every Player Should Know Before Their First Game
The written and unwritten rules that separate a good squad from a chaotic one.
Every turf has a laminated 'rules' sheet on the wall that nobody reads. Most of those rules exist for good reasons, but the ones that actually matter aren't on the wall. Here are the 12 that will keep your squad welcome, your bookings honest, and your ankles intact.
1. Wear the right footwear
Metal spikes destroy synthetic turf and will get you turned away at the gate. What you want is AG (artificial grass) boots or TF (turf) trainers, short, numerous studs that spread load. If you're brand new to turf sport, a decent pair of flat-sole running shoes works for a couple of sessions; upgrade before your ankles start hating you.
2. Turn up 10 minutes early, warm up outside
Turf slots start on the dot and end on the dot. Doing your 15-minute warmup on the paid pitch is a self-inflicted wound, that's 25% of a 60-minute booking gone. Warm up in the parking lot or corridor, walk on ready to play.
3. Return equipment properly
Bats, stumps, gloves, and cones are the turf's, not yours. Losing a stump or leaving a bat behind is charged (fair) and remembered (unfair, you'll get the worse gear next time). Return kit at the end, count it back in.
4. No food, no shoes, no chewing gum on the pitch
Gum in synthetic turf is a nightmare to clean and shortens the pitch's life by years. Food attracts stray dogs to the boundary at night. Shoes off the pitch means shoes off, no exceptions for spectators either.
5. Damage is your problem
Break a light, tear a net, snap a stump because someone bowled a beamer? You pay for it. Every serious turf will hold your deposit until they've walked the pitch. Fair. Don't dispute it, build it into your squad's expectation.
6. Loud music has a curfew
Most Nashik and Pune turfs sit near residential blocks. Almost every turf has a 'no speakers after 10pm' rule and it's enforced. Bring a Bluetooth speaker at low volume, or keep it in the car.
7. Alcohol on the premises = booking cancelled
Non-negotiable at almost every turf. Bring a bottle of anything and your booking is done, deposit gone, and you're on a blacklist. It's not worth the fight, celebrate elsewhere.
8. Rain policy, know it before you book
Standard is: full reschedule if the turf calls the cancellation, no refund if you cancel because your squad decided it was too wet. Confirm this in writing before you pay. Covered turfs cost more per hour but save your monsoon season.
9. Cancellation windows are real
Most turfs offer a full refund on 24-hour cancellation, half refund on 12-hour, none inside 6. This is fair, a same-day cancellation is a slot they can't resell. Set a WhatsApp reminder for your squad to confirm by 24 hours out.
10. Kids on the pitch, check first
Some turfs charge per head over a certain number; some don't allow non-playing kids on the pitch at all (insurance reasons). Ask when you book, not when you show up.
11. Photos and reels are fine, drones aren't
Almost every turf welcomes squad photos and short reels. Drones require a heads-up and often a small extra fee for the insurance headache. Just ask before you take off.
12. Leave it better than you found it
Pick up your water bottles, tape balls, and stump bails on the way out. The next squad will get a cleaner turf and you'll get remembered as the group the turf manager likes. That matters when you're trying to book a peak slot last-minute.
